New TV for the World Cup? Here’s our guide to choosing the best TV unit to house your new TV!
May 21st, 2010
With the football world cup fast approaching, widescreen plasma and LED televisions are having a real boom. With this in mind we want to make it easy to choose the right TV unit for your new TV.
With many TVs looking ultra modern it can be nice to keep a traditional solid wood TV stand to tie in with the rest of your living room furniture. Myakka has a range of over seven different options to both suit your decor and support your new prized purchase.
If you have gone ultra large with your TV, our Mallani TV Console is the ideal choice. Measuring 130cm in width, it is wide enough to accommodate the largest flat screen. This unit has a long open shelf which offers plenty of room to hold your digital box and DVD player and also includes two storage drawers for all your DVDs and other TV paraphernalia.
The Mallani Low Level TV Unit is a slightly smaller alternative which is also suitable for widescreen TVs with two neat drawers for your DVDs and CDs. The wide shelf is perfect for your digital equipment and DVD player and has an open back to make cable management simple.
If space is an issue a corner TV unit might be more useful and Myakka have three different and equally popular options in the Mallani, Khimsar and Thakat range ensuring there is one to suit your personal taste. All three feature an open shelf for your digital box and the Mallani Corner TV and the Khimsar Corner TV units both feature a handy storage cupboard with the Thakat Corner TV unit having a practical drawer designed to fit DVDs.
If you are looking for something that is a bit more traditional our Portcullis TV Cabinet may be right up your street, with intricate iron work detailing on the front this is a real show stopper. The unit features a large storage cupboard to hide away your entertainment library and an open shelf for your digital equipment.
Similar in size, the classic Khimsar TV Unit is a beautifully proportioned piece hand crafted in Acacia hard wood finished with brushed aluminium handles. It includes an open back shelf for easy cable management and a cupboard for all your TV accessories.
For a more flexible approach, our storage coffee tables may be the ideal solution. Available in both the Mallani and Khimsar ranges, these coffee tables also make ideal TV units as they have two shelves for storing your digital equipment and four useful drawers designed to fit DVDs and CDs which open from either side. The Mallani Storage Coffee Table and Khimsar Storage Coffee Table are both 110cm wide which also makes them suitable for widescreen TVs.
Most important is to consider the size of the unit you choose – you need to ensure you have enough space for all the additional essentials such as digibox and DVD player and easy cable management through open back shelves or dedicated channels is a must. All of Myakka’s solid hard wood TV units are sturdy and strong to comfortably support even the heaviest of widescreen TVs. At the end of the day you have to love your TV unit as much as your TV as you are likely to spend a lot of time looking at it… especially is England perform well in the World Cup!

It’s not all work, work, work…
May 20th, 2010
Being a business that operates seven days a week, we do like to let our hair down just occasionally and that’s exactly what we did on Wednesday. With a lot of planning by our Social Secretary, Claire, all fifteen of the Myakka team descended on the Kennet and Avon canal in Bradford on Avon.
Not long after a quick lesson from Wayne the boat engineer, we set sail on the canal and we were soon chugging along. Rich our Warehouse Manger was in charge of captaining the boat, complete with pirate patch he truly looked the part. Our first challenge arrived when we reached the lock… the gates of which, without access to reverse gear to stop the barge, we viewed in very close detail! After calling out Wayne for a short tutorial in finding reverse, we navigated through the lock and got back on the open waters once again with an extra vessel to add to our fleet… the Canadian Kayak powered by Alexandra and Simon.

By this point Rich had the hang if the barge and we were chugging along nicely. As there are 15 of us in the team and only 10 were allowed on the barge at a time some of us decided to take the opportunity to go on a nice stroll. We soon ran into a problem as the towpath abruptly came to an end with Georgie and Heather finding themselves in a field of cows and in need of rescue by the two in the kayak. Shortly after we arrived at our destination, moored up and made the walk to reach the pub for a spot of lunch where some of the beer-drinking stragglers decided to join us!
After we were fed, watered and all too full to move we made our way back to the canal to attempt to turn around and come back the other way. This time the whole team got a chance to captain the barge with varying degrees of success! After a few incidents with the bank and some trees, we made it back to lock navigating through like true professionals before heading back to the Marina to park up and travel home. Georgie was now at the helm and proved the women drivers can park with a near perfect sweep into the Marina and our space, much to the annoyance of the guys who helped in the lock who were having some real issues (in fairness, their barge was about 30ft longer!)
All in all we had a great day with lots of food, drink and laughs. The icing on the cake was meeting Wayne’s pet duck, Boris, in the car park on the way home!

GRAND reception for Myakka’s latest DESIGNS
May 12th, 2010
Pleasing a design sensitive audience such as the attendees of Grand Designs Live is a notable achievement! We have just returned from this year’s Show and we were delighted by the huge level of interest in that surrounded their latest furniture designs that had only been released in March.
“This was the first time people have had the chance to see all the new pieces and we were delighted at how well they were received, especially given what a design conscious audience attend this popular show.”, commented Georgie Hopkins, director.
The most popular pieces at the show were the new eye catching Thakat Column Drawers. Their cylindrical shape combined with the deep lustre of the Sheesham wood really catches the light and peoples eye! The contemporary yet practical Khimsar Storage Coffee Table also received an enormous amount of interest as did one of the latest additions to the Mallani range, the Mallani Storage Seat.
“Grand Designs is a great opportunity to chat with some of our regular customers as well as meet lots of interesting new people. The stand looked great and the competition to win one of three Elephant Cupboards was hugely popular.” commented Simon Whitehead, director.
Our furniture is designed specifically for the British market produced in India using the latest computer controlled machinery to ensure consistent quality. We are an ethical business following the principles of fair trade supporting both their suppliers and their communities in India and Somerset. These latest designs are extensions of our most popular ranges, combining the beauty of Indian hardwood with the latest furniture construction technology and over ten years of furniture design experience. After all if they are well received by the audience of Grand Designs…

The background of Kilim rugs
May 6th, 2010
Kilims are flat woven rugs made with a combination of jute, wool and cotton. The origins of kilim rugs are unknown but there are different examples of these rugs across most of Asia and the Balkans with the earliest date back to the fourth or fifth century. Being flat woven, kilims differ in appearance to the traditional pile that we are used to seeing in carpets and wool rugs. For this reason they are quite thin, but due to the closeness of the weave and quality of materials, make for very durable floor coverings.
More recently, kilim rugs have been woven with a mix of 70% jute and 30% wool, but as the global demand for jute increases as an environmentally sound material, there has been a move away from jute and an increase in the levels of cotton and wool used in the weave. The resulting closer weave which is produced in a 80% wool – 20% cotton kilim makes the finished product softer, more durable and kinder under foot. The use of cotton and wool has the added benefit of the dyes being more readily absorbed which gives a much richer and vibrant colour within the woven, geometric design.
Many kilim rugs on the market today are made in India, often within small cottage industries. The wool comes from the Bikaneer region of India which borders Pakistan, which is carefully hand spun, washed and hand dyed with traditional natural dyes before being woven into the geometric patterns which are so inherent of kilims. More traditionally, the different symbols had specific meanings and reflected long life, fertility and family; however modern versions focus less on symbolic meaning and are more aesthetic appeal. Depending on the size of the kilim, the craftsmen work either alone on the loom or in pairs and the work is often fitted within farming commitments, which can often make the supply a little unpredictable! Once completed, the rugs are transported by any means possible (foot, bike, cart, etc) to the main warehouse, where they are given a final QC check and packed for shipping to the UK.
At Myakka, we pride ourselves of offering an extensive range of both wool and jute kilims, in an array of sizes, all sourced through recognised fair trade channels. Click here to view our entire range.
