Myakka supports Recycle Week 22 – 28th June

June 22nd, 2009

Myakka, fair trade retailer in Somerset, recycle all their cardboard, paper and general kitchen waste (like milk cartons and coffee tins).
That’s why supporting Recycle Week was easy, so they thought!

Georgie Hopkins, director for Myakka says “We reuse and then recycle all our paper.  We support our community resource centre, The Scrapstore in Yeovil, that collect our surplus bubble wrap and string.  As a business we actually don’t create much waste. That got us really thinking about what else we could do to support Recycle Week.”

As part of Recycle Week, companies and individuals can make a pledge to waste less and recycle more.  As Myakka are already quite good at recycling, their pledge is to compost all their teabags! This definitely sounds like a good excuse to drink more tea while they think up more ways to improve Myakka’s reducing, reusing and recycling!

Shooting for the New Catalogue & 10th Birthday

June 22nd, 2009
Work on the new Myakka catalogue has started with a week long photo shoot at four locations near Myakka’s HQ in Somerset.

The catalogue will be released in September, announcing the arrival of some stunning new lines including additions to the already popular Mallani, Thakat and Khimsar ranges of natural, solid wood furniture.

The new designs have been put together in response to customer requests for specific items such as dining tables, sideboards and nests of tables. As with all Myakka furniture, these ranges have been designed for the British market made by expert Indian craftsmen, using the latest German computer controlled machinery.

Myakka use professional London based photographer, Simon de Glanville, who was recently splashed across many national newspapers with his quirky photographs of London wildlife.

Simon assisted Myakka in taking a quirky shot of their own, to help celebrate Myakka’s 10th birthday this summer. “We had a lot of fun designing and crafting the birthday party image which we have titled ‘The morning after Myakka’s Furniture Party’,” says Georgie Hopkins, Director for Myakka. “Let’s just say we have literally brought the furniture to life!”

From Somerset Showroom to Pigeons in Peckham!

June 11th, 2009

Myakka is famous for lots of things: great furniture, importing a Rikshaw from India, even group banana eating, but their photographer’s antics have caught the limelight on this occasion!

Simon De Glanville travels the world as a professional photographer, yet when he is at home in London, he often ventures to the park with a bag of chips or kebab to entice some of the ‘locals’. This random pastime was picked up by a few of the national newspapers this week when his photographs of local London wildlife came to light. Photographing pigeons in Peckham wasn’t exactly what Simon wanted to be known for, but it seems now his secret is out!

Simon explains his ‘pet project’ London Wildlife: ‘People tend to be very interested in the lives of animals on the other side of the planet, but we often overlook the interesting behaviour happening on our doorsteps.’ While his work was always supposed to about capturing interesting images of pigeons just for fun, other animals such as squirrels, ducks and near by dogs got in on the act. He has even produced a fantastic image of a dog eating a Kebab!

While we congratulate Simon on his national exposure, we just hope that we can drag him from the park long enough to photograph our furniture and lovely new products next week! Then again, if he can make a half eaten kebab look good, we know we’re in safe hands!
